Luke and His Empire of Flesh.
Released in February 1996, this vintage issue of The Source features Miami bass pioneer and 2 Live Crew frontman Uncle Luke on the cover. As the South continued to carve out its massive share of the hip-hop industry, this cover story captures Luther Campbell reflecting on his empire and controversial legacy.
Beyond the Miami representation, this issue is a dense 90s time capsule. It features a special report on the foundational elements of hip-hop (graffiti, breakdancing, and DJing), plus heavy-hitting articles on Lord Finesse, Coolio & LV, and NBA icon Dennis Rodman. (Bonus: The back cover features a vintage 1996 advertisement for Ellesse sneakers).
