The Rookie Year of Hov.
Released in November 1996, this rare issue of Rap Pages captures Jay-Z just months after the release of his masterpiece debut, Reasonable Doubt. Securing a cover feature on a Los Angeles-based publication during the height of the 1996 East Coast/West Coast tension makes this an incredibly significant historical document.
The issue explores "The Truth According to Jay-Z" as he and Roc-A-Fella Records began their industry ascent. It also features a deep dive into Chuck D, Mystik Journeymen, and Whodini. Because Rap Pages had a significantly lower print run than its East Coast competitors, surviving copies of this 1996 Jay-Z cover are highly sought-after by hip-hop archivists. (Bonus: The back cover features a classic 1996 Menace "Clothing With Attitude" denim advertisement).
Condition Disclosure (Please Read):
This is a raw, vintage reading copy. The magazine is complete, but please be aware of its structural flaws before purchasing. The front cover presents beautifully overall but has a noticeable tear and missing chip of paper on the bottom left corner, directly below the barcode. There is also typical edge wear, spine color-rub, and surface handling wear consistent with the era's thinner paper stock. The back cover exhibits minor corner blunting. It has not been professionally graded. Please review all photos carefully.
